The résumé still holds. Career 40.9 percent from three. Fourth all-time in makes. High-volume shooter who still lets it fly. Even in a rough Dallas season he kept shooting and converted catch-and-shoot looks at a real rate. Miami does not need 2016 Klay. It needs the version that forces every defense to account for him the moment he leaves the corner. That version is still here.

The geometry is simple and mean. Giannis goes downhill and forces the defense to collapse. Bam handles the short roll and the handoff. Help becomes mandatory. The only question is whether the defense can rotate without leaving a shooter alone. Thompson is the reason that rotation fails.

He does not need the ball. He never did. His game lives in movement, relocation, and the catch-and-release before the closeout arrives. He runs off screens, lifts from the corner, and finds daylight along the baseline. Spoelstra has run those actions for years. Thompson has lived in them his entire career. The fit is not theoretical. It is the design.

Picture this: Giannis has the ball on the right wing. Bam is at the elbow. Thompson starts in the left corner. Wiggins fills the weak side. Mitchell stays back as the safety valve. Giannis drives middle. The low man helps. Bam short-rolls and pulls the next defender. Thompson sprints the baseline, catches the skip pass, and rises. One extra step of help and the three is open.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is on the roster. Bam Adebayo still owns the defensive axis. Klay Thompson and Tim Hardaway Jr. came to stretch defenses until they snap. Bobby Portis came for the ride and the salary. Media Day hits Sep 28. Training camp opens Sep 29 at Kaseya Center. Tip-off is still a rumor. Between now and the whistle, quit pretending this is already a title team. Prove the pieces lock on the floor Spoelstra paints.

This is the pre-camp board. Not a prediction market. Not a vibe. What Miami bought, what Miami sold, what still has to be solved before Erik Spoelstra gets the brush.

What Miami paid

The Heat did not steal Giannis. They emptied the cupboard that was supposed to keep them relevant without a true alpha.

According to Hoops Rumors' Sep 11, 2026 offseason check-in, Miami acquired Antetokounmpo and Portis from Milwaukee for Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, the draft rights to Nate Ament (No. 13), the Heat's 2031 first-round pick, the Heat's 2033 first-round pick, the Heat's 2033 second-round pick, and the right to swap 2030 first-round picks.

Read that again. A former Sixth Man of the Year who had stacked 20-point seasons. A young big still on a rookie deal. A two-way wing Miami had developed into a rotation staple. Another young first-round piece. A lottery chip in a loaded draft. Future firsts. That is how you buy a two-time MVP when you do not have the prettiest single asset in the room.

Reporting around the sweepstakes said Milwaukee passed on a Boston package headlined by Jaylen Brown. Quantity versus star quality is the easy narrative. The Heat's package was younger, deeper, and full of players Milwaukee could actually build with. Miami bet the development factory could replace what it shipped. That bet is the season.

Portis was not a free gift. His contract helped hard-cap Miami at the first tax apron. Giannis arrived with a price tag that limited the shopping trip around him.

What Miami kept and what Miami spent

Andrew Wiggins is still here. Nikola Jovic is still here. That mattered.

Hoops Rumors reported Miami worked out a new deal with Wiggins but structured it as a two-year, about $33.8 million extension after he picked up a roughly $30.2 million player option, rather than resetting him lower as a free agent. The front office signaled it was not panic-spending every dollar to win one year. Next summer Wiggins' hit drops sharply in that reporting, which is when Miami wants more oxygen around Giannis and Bam.

Jovic's value cratered after an injury-wrecked season. Selling low would have been pure salary dumping. Miami held.

Then came the mid-level math. Miami split about $11.7 million of non-taxpayer mid-level money between Thompson and Hardaway Jr. Hoops Rumors has Thompson at two years and about $11.48 million with a second-year player option and a trade kicker. Hardaway is listed at one year and about $6.07 million, fully guaranteed. Simone Fontecchio returned on a minimum. Nick Richards signed a non-guaranteed minimum. Second-rounder Ryan Conwell arrived via a Thunder swap of draft rights and signed a cheap rookie deal after shooting threes at volume in college.

Norman Powell left for Chicago on a two-year, $44 million deal Miami could not fit under the apron. That is the scar on an otherwise aggressive summer. Miami got the MVP and the shooters it could afford. It did not get every scorer it wanted.

The frontcourt is the show

Giannis and Bam are the East's new geometry problem.

Antetokounmpo is the first true go-to scorer Miami has owned since LeBron James left in 2014. AllUCanHeat's Sep 17, 2026 piece put it bluntly: no Heat player has averaged at least 24 points per game since James in 2013-14, and no Heat player has posted a usage rate of 30 or higher since Dwyane Wade in 2015-16. Giannis has lived above a 32 usage mark for years. He is not arriving to share the pie politely.

Bam has been the featured big in a committee offense. Now he shares the paint with a two-time MVP who wants the ball as a weapon, not a guest. That is not a vibe conflict. That is minutes, touches, screening angles, and who finishes the play when help collapses.

Defensively this can be terrifying. Two All-Defense caliber pillars. Offensively this can be crowded if Bam's three-point touch does not travel far enough to punish help. Last season he shot 31.8 percent from three on about 5.5 attempts a night. That volume without elite accuracy is exactly what defenses will dare him to keep taking next to Giannis. Analyst chatter has already circled Bam's finishing and touch as the swing skill next to Giannis. That debate will not die in September. It will live or die on tape once the games start.

Portis gives Miami a scorer off the bench who can shoot. ESPN preview reporting has flagged the flip side: rim protection and Spoelstra-standard defense may not be automatic. Richards is a non-guaranteed depth swing. The frontcourt is deep on paper and unfinished in role definition.

Spacing is not optional

This is where Thompson and Hardaway earn their money. Hardaway and Fontecchio thicken the floor. Thompson is the structural answer.

Collapse is the Heat's new problem and their new weapon. Giannis goes downhill and forces a crowd. Bam short-rolls or handoffs and pulls the next body. Help has to come. Then the weak side has to scramble without abandoning the arc. Thompson's job is to make that scramble lose.

He does not need the rock to matter. His value is relocation before the closeout, a quick rise on the catch, and baseline cuts that punish the low man for helping one beat too long. Spoelstra's offense has lived in those patterns for a long time. Thompson's career has lived in the same patterns. The fit is not a wish. It is personnel finally matching a book that was waiting for this body type.

The shooting ledger still forces accountancy. Roughly two of every five career threes. Fourth on the all-time makes list. A Dallas year that looked ugly in other ways still produced real conversion on catch-and-release looks. Miami is not buying 2016 Finals Klay. Miami is buying the version that still makes every defense keep a body on him the second he leaves the corner.

Watch the secondary damage. Chase him around a pin-down and Giannis gets an extra step. Tag the roll and he is already lifting to the arc. Stay home and the paint opens. Contagious spacing spreads through the other four. Fake spacing dies on the first help rotation.

Culture talk is not a warning label here. He came looking for a hard job description: move without the ball, shoot without apology, hold your side. Taking a discount to stand next to two physical forces is construction, not a reunion tour. Hardaway Jr. and Fontecchio make the same math louder. Davion Mitchell's downhill pressure can be the safety valve. Wiggins still has to be a two-way adult, not a highlight reel. Conwell is a shooting flier, not a finished lock.

Age, shot diet, and who starts next to Giannis and Bam are still camp questions. The schematic promise is inside-out basketball with threes built around interior gravity. Camp is where Spoelstra turns that promise into five-man units that do not look like two stars fighting for the same airspace.

The learning curve is the season

Committee basketball is a habit. Miami has lived it for a decade.

Players learned to move the ball, hunt good shots, and survive without a 30-point alpha. That culture built Finals runs and also built ceilings. Giannis breaks the culture on purpose. Usage is not a personality trait. It is a system choice. Spoelstra has to teach veterans to feed a superstar without becoming spectators, and teach a superstar to trust a Heat defense-first identity without sanding off his dominance.

AllUCanHeat's point lands because it is mechanical: Bam's role is unclear until the games are played. That is not a dig. That is the honest pre-camp sentence. Competitiveness will help. Competitiveness does not assign screeners.

If Spoelstra solves this, Miami is a contender with size, shooting and two-way violence. If he does not, Miami is a talented mess with a superstar and a spacing plan that dies in January.

Last season's scar

Miami finished 43-39 and 10th in the East. The Heat lost an overtime play-in to Charlotte and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2018-19. That is the scar Giannis walked into. Not a soft rebuild. A franchise that had already spent two ugly post-Butler winters trying to stay relevant without a true alpha.

The Butler trade hangover is verified backdrop, not therapy. Miami shipped Butler to Golden State in February 2025 and never fully stabilized the seasons that followed. This summer was the reset with a price tag.

Cap reality, long view

Hoops Rumors has Miami operating over the cap, below the first tax apron, hard-capped there, with team salary around $206.4 million in that report: about $6 million over the tax line and about $2.6 million under the hard cap. A partial mid-level exception remains; the full bi-annual exception is still available. A 15th roster spot is mathematically possible with a minimum. Another ball-handler would help. Unless that player is a real rotation piece, Miami may leave the seat empty for in-season flexibility.

Giannis extension timing is constrained by post-trade rules. Hoops Rumors flagged January timing as the early window and noted option complications if he signs in-season. The Heat are not publicly sweating the long-term marriage. They should still treat January as a business date, not a vibe date.

Pelle Larsson is extension-eligible and became a real minutes eater last season. Locking him earlier can matter for trade flexibility next summer. That is front-office chess, not camp poetry.

The Wiggins structure and the held Jovic bet say the same thing: Miami wants 2026-27 to matter, and it wants 2027 and beyond to still have ammo. That is adult roster management. It is also a reminder that this summer was not a blank check.

What camp has to answer

Camp is not a coronation. Camp is a checklist.

1. Who starts next to Giannis and Bam on opening night, and who eats the first substitution? 2. Does Bam's offense expand outward, or does he become the world's most expensive screener? 3. Can Thompson and Hardaway stay healthy enough to make the spacing real in April, not just October? 4. Is Portis a bridge or a problem on the defensive end Spoelstra actually trusts? 5. Where does the second initiator live if Mitchell is the pressure piece and nobody else owns the half-court keys? 6. Can Jovic rebuild value, or is he a sunk-cost wing in a star-driven pecking order? 7. Does Conwell force minutes with shooting, or is he December depth?

Those are not Twitter questions. Those are Spoelstra questions. The answers show up in practice film before they show up in standings.

The Heat Index truth

Miami did not buy a narrative. Miami bought a mechanism.

Giannis creates help. Shooters punish help. Bam protects the other end and still has to find offense without clogging the paint. Portis and the mid-level crew fill gaps. The apron hard-cap is the tax on winning the auction. Powell walking is the scar. Camp is the first exam.

Opening night is not a preview anymore. It is a warning shot to the East, but only if the pieces lock. Until then, treat every confident podcast take as provisional. The superstar is in the building. The roles still have to settle.

Stock the expectations carefully. Contender is earned on tape, not announced at an introductory press conference. The trade is done. The roster is loud. Now Spoelstra has to make it coherent.
